Privacy notice
What we collect when you read Diat or subscribe to the newsletter, why we collect it, and how to get it deleted.
⚠️ This is a template, not reviewed by a lawyer
This notice is a starting point written for a blog with an email newsletter and basic analytics. No solicitor has read it, it names no jurisdiction, and several details below are still placeholders. It must be checked by someone qualified — and matched against the tools actually in use — before this site launches.
Last updated: To be set at launch
Who we are
Diat publishes nutrition writing at diat.blog. The legal entity responsible for this site, its company registration details, its registered address and the country whose data protection law applies are all still to be confirmed and are deliberately left blank rather than guessed at. Our contact channel is being set up; its status is on the contact page.
What we collect
You can read every article on this site without giving us anything. We collect personal data in three situations only:
- When you subscribe to the newsletter. Your email address, plus the date you subscribed and a record of your consent.
- When you email us. Your address and whatever you write, kept so we can reply and keep track of corrections.
- When you load a page. Technical data our host and analytics record — a truncated or hashed IP address, approximate country, browser and device type, the page requested and the referring page.
We do not ask for your name, date of birth, address, payment details or any health information, and we ask you not to send us health details you would rather we did not hold.
Newsletter
The newsletter is opt-in. We only email you if you ask us to, and we use a double opt-in where our email provider supports it, so nobody can sign up an address that is not theirs.
We use your address to send the newsletter and nothing else. We never sell, rent or share subscriber lists. Our email provider may record whether a message was opened and which links were clicked; that tells us which articles are worth writing more of.
The newsletter is not accepting signups yet. Once it launches, each email will include an unsubscribe link. We will explain how removal requests work when the service is live.
Analytics
We measure how many people read each article, roughly where in the world they are, and which pages they arrived from. It is aggregate and we use it to decide what to write next.
When enabled, we use Google Analytics to measure visits and pages read. Its tag loads only after you choose “Allow analytics”. Google may set analytics cookies and process usage data under its own privacy terms. Saying no leaves the tag unloaded.
Cookies and local storage
We do not use advertising cookies. If Google Analytics is enabled, we ask before loading its tag, which may set analytics cookies.
The site stores your light or dark mode preference and, when analytics is enabled, your analytics choice in your browser's local storage. You can reopen the choice with “Cookie settings” in the footer, or clear these choices in your browser's site data settings.
Declining analytics does not affect access to the site.
Third parties
Running a site means other companies process some data on our behalf. Each one is a processor acting under contract, and each should be named here with a link to its own privacy notice.
- Hosting and CDN — Cloudflare serves the pages and processes network requests.
- Email provider — stores the subscriber list and sends the newsletter. Provider to be named.
- Analytics — Google Analytics counts visits and page views only after you opt in.
- Fonts — the typefaces are served from our own domain where possible, so loading a page need not call a font host. To be confirmed as part of the launch check.
We do not sell personal data, and we never will. We would only disclose data to anyone else if we were legally required to.
Legal basis
Where data protection law requires us to name a basis for processing: the newsletter runs on your consent, which you can withdraw at any time; replying to your emails and keeping the site secure and working rely on our legitimate interests. This paragraph needs checking against the law that actually applies to us.
How long we keep things
- Newsletter subscriptions — for as long as you stay subscribed. Addresses that have not opened anything for two years are removed.
- Emails to us — kept for up to two years, except correspondence about a published correction, which we keep as part of the article record.
- Server logs — short-lived, typically weeks rather than months, as set by our host.
- Analytics — retained as aggregate counts. These are not tied to you as an individual.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask for a copy of what we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to how we use it, to receive it in a portable form, and to withdraw consent at any time.
A dedicated privacy contact channel is being set up. The contact page will show it when available. We may need to check you control the address in question before acting on a request.
Children
Diat is written for adults and the newsletter is not intended for children. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has subscribed, tell us and we will delete the record.
Changes to this notice
When this notice changes we update the date at the top. If a change materially affects how we use your data, we will say so in the newsletter rather than relying on you to re-read this page.
Contact and complaints
Our contact channel is being set up. Check the contact page for its status.
If we handle a request badly you can usually complain to the data protection regulator where you live. The specific regulator for this site will be named here once the jurisdiction is settled.
Our terms of use cover the rest of the relationship between you and this site.
